<It will be my first boat, and I'm looking for something that's general <purpose -- that I can use for day paddles as well as longer trips here on <the West Coast (Southern California). My first purchase was a K-1 and I have never regretted it. NOT the ideal Sunday afternoon paddle. Always takes an hour to assemble. If that's what your going to use it for, you ideally have a place to leave it assembled. I hear the new K-1's assemble faster. The K-1 is a superb expedition boat. In rough seas it is second to none in speed and tracking. By all means use the rudder, though. Only takes a second to assemble, and who wants to paddle 20 miles trying to track straight without a rudder? Exhausting!
