Well, I didn't think it was possible.
Took some friends out to kayak. Small man made lake, flat calm, put
them in the big stable rotomolded double. Told them to keep their bodies
upright. 30 feet from shore, they capsize. There were no waves, no
wake, just glass smooth water. Some people are not meant to kayak...

My wife and I had taken the same kayak out as clueless newbies in rougher
water (Puget Sound, complete with boat and ferry wakes, wind and waves)
and marveled at how stable that double was...

Either that, or it was mother daughter bickering, the dysfunctional family.
We got them back to shore and back in the boat, and they were able to
paddle around for awhile without another capsize.

Still a good reminder to be careful with newbies.

After getting used to the relatively protected waters of Puget Sound,
it was still really weird to be in flat calm water on a small lake.
The Pygmy Coho is seeming more stable all the time.

Some will remember my newbie adventures this past winter. The dangers really
never sunk in, although many here did their best, until this summer I took
someone out for their first trip.

I looked over at him just in time to see this unmistakable look of "I'm
going over". The water was warm and flat, and I had gone over self and
assisted rescues with him before we got 20 feet from the put in. We had no
trouble getting him back in the kayak and finishing our trip.

But what nagged at me that day (and still does) as I watched him weave and
wobble along the river was "Damn, that was me not too long ago."

There was of course, one big difference. If I had gone over in those first
months, I would have been alone, in 30-something degree water. I could only
speculate on what the consequences may have been.
