As usual Doug is always looking for that one cloud on a clear day.

This years symposium was just as good as previous years. Yes, there are the occasional glitches especially in registration when 40-50 people show up all at once and want to get registered. Everything is fairly well organized there. As for the food, I will be the first one to say it isn't a four star hotel. The food was OK, not great but, eh you are trying to feed hundreds of people and they do have to know ahead of time so there will be enough. This year the restaurant tried something different instead of the old take a try and filler up, they sat everyone at tables and they were served. At first I thought this was rather dumb, as the weekend went on I began to like it. I found I was able to meet a lot more people than I usually did because you are often sitting with half a dozen strangers and you begin to talk.

Yes there is a lot of childishness going on with the boat manufacturers, it is unfortunate that they don't participate. Quite frankly in all the years I have been there I can't remember every seeing Mariner Kayaks represented. It is too bad.

As for the signage and the buildings, it was alright one just had to remember that the event only had a couple anyway so unless you are a complete dummy one couldn't get lost.

The Friday and Saturday night slide shows had a lot to be desired, I fell asleep during Tom Roshon's talk.

So all in all the event was good and I do not have anything to do with TAPS, the organization that sponsors the event.

So Doug, stop pissing on a sunny day!!!

Kirby

I would agree that my post was somewhat negative. Actually, I had limited
exposure to some of these situations, such as the reasturant thing. Also, I
had nothing to compare it to, as I have not been recently. My post did
indicate that my report was based on my own observation. Those observations
also include the comments I heard about me, as I tried to keep my ear to
the ground. My comments about the food situation, the registration process,
signage, and beach confusion were almost entirely from things others said
to me or I overhear. So, Kirby's comments cause me to say, "Hey, don't piss
on the messanger - know what I mean?

Anyway, the volunteers who organized and ran the event should be praised
for their hard work and tireless efforts. I should have mentioned this in
my report, but I had my head up in the cloud :-)

And Doug replied:
I would agree that my post was somewhat negative.

And now FWIW, Sandy comments:
I was very frustrated trying to get preliminary info from TAPS, considering
the fact that I was planning a cross country trip. They were less than
helpful at the time I was needing to make plane reservations. During the
East Coast event over the last four years, I have made friends with many of
the symposia circuit presenters and the consensus is that the PT event is
well attended and earns high marks from the attendees, but less organized
compared to others. Maybe high volume has an impact here. I don't know.
But Doug's remarks rang true and I appreciated them, without getting a dogged
impression of the PT event as a whole. Heck, a bunch of people gathered
together at a fabulous location to celebrate the sport of kayaking? I'd
travel to Podunk or even Mudville Flats for that! I'll shut up now. :)
Sandy in SC, so yes, I'm automatically partial to the Charleston symposium in
April

I had the best experience yet (been attending 11-12 years): spent all 3 days
teaching on the water (3 classes a day). I did NOT attend any indoor
functions including: indoor classes (except for fish painting on the pier),
official evening events, or WCSKS "food" "service".

Hey gang,

Kirby's comments were okay - his bark is worse than his bite. I was a
little upset though, when Kirby said that dealers who didn't attend were a
bit childish. I hope no one feels that is my feeling too. I was simply
disappointed that Matt/Cam weren't there with their kayaks, as I would have
loved to have tried them out; same with Seda and Eddyline.

If Matt doesn't want to bring his boats, that is *his* choice. Maybe he has
good reasons.

I'll just have to make the "pilgrimage" to mecca (Seattle) sometime soon. I
hear it is a religious experience. In the meantime, I shall bow four times
a day, in this case, South!!!

Doug,

I'm not sure why you cc'd me on this as the below comment was not made by
me. Also, I didn't see this on the list. Was this private email to
you that you have posted publicly?
