>> My memory vaguely recalls some discussion regarding selective availability (the scrambling of signals) being turned off in the not so distant future. Is this true, or are we stuck with differential GPS if we want accuracy? Thanks, Kevin ps. Are there any handheld D-GPS systems suitable for kayaking? >> Selective availability *may* be turned off sometime in the next six years, but don't hold your breath. The US government is supposed to review SA status annually starting next year. It is supposed to be turned off by 2006, but who knows what may happen before then? I don't know of any DGPS units suitable for kayaking. Units such as the Garmin 12XL and 12CX are not themselves DGPS units, though I think they are differential-ready.
