A recent thread concerning short-term weather forecasting using an
altimeter sparked my memory. Nicke Shrade's website has a wonderful
collection of reports from Gail Ferris who has paddled in Northern
Greenland. She has firsthand knowledge of reading the clouds and using a
barometer for short-term forecasting of weather change. I haven't seen
her on this list but she has been on a kayak-sailing list recently. Her
accounts of solo paddling in the Artic are fascinating. The URL for
Gail's Stories is

I admire the balance she strikes between adventure / exploring and
danger / risktaking. I try to strike this same kind of balance when I
explore my little area of the world. When the danger/risk level is
unacceptable I am quite willing to stay ashore. Jake
