Aug 25: Arrived SeaTac 11:05am. Picked up by Fred and drove to Mariner Kayaks on Lake Washington. Two hour fast demo in a Mariner II and Mariner MAX, changing boats for comparison. II is considerable faster than MAX. Sliding seat still uncomfortable. Calm water so no other conclusions. Found great Mexican food in Poulsbo of all places and excellent camping spot at Bishop Victorian Hotel in Port Townsend. Aug 26: Paddled from Port Townsend to Indian Island, around Indian, through Port Townsend Canal and back along Marrowstone to Pt Roberts, then back to start. About 18NM, and 4 hours paddling time. We came up the Admiralty Inlet side of Marrowstone against a peak spring flood and light wind. Beautiful calm conditions and a very good exercise. Saw "Thomas Crown Affair" in the evening. Funny. Aug 27: Hiked at Hurricane Ridge in the Olympics. Could see across to Victoria and decided to save that crossing till another lifetime. Aug 28: Took ferry to Whidby Island. Paddled from Hoypus Pt, just east of Deception Pass across Skagit Bay, through Hole in the Wall and up Skagit River. The estuary is quite beautiful with little sign of civilization even though civilization is quite close. Light rain, calm wind and the brightest rainbow I ever saw. Did not bother taking the compass and became disoriented on return and did not arrive back until after dark. Never mind. Good exercise and another beautiful paddle. Recommend Lasagna at Bella Isola in Anacortes. Aug 29: Short but pleasant paddle from Cap Sante around Hat and Saddlebag and return. Returned for more Lasagna, even though we did not earn it. Aug 30: Took ferry to Friday Harbor and paddled Haro Strait for 4 hours looking for whales. Glassy calm. Porpoises aplenty but no whales. Local said that they left day before. Aug 31: Returned to SeaTac with a stop at Olympic Outdoor in Poulsbo where we saw and drooled over the Seaward Passat double. How would it handle off the water. Fit in garage; on car? Excellent trip, no mosquito bites. Mosquitos aren't really so bad ...once you work out a few recipes that they're okay in. Hmmmmm, there's scrambled eggs mosquito, mosquito bisque w/ gravy, mosquito'ed rice, mosquito roast ( ...takes a whole bunch of 'em ! ), and my favorite, mosquito'ed red snapper ! Hey, wait just a minute ...maybe this recipe book says "MESQUITE" ...darn, bi-focals ! Oh, well ...if they bite you, I say just bite'em back !! Thanks for the trip report anyway ! 8-) ...adieu ...Peyton (Louisiana) > > > >************************************************************************ *** >PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List >Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net >Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net >Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ >************************************************************************ *** ___________________________________________________________________ Get the Internet just the way you want it.
