Elaine, I carry all 3, a GPS, a deck mounted compass, and a handheld compass in my PFD pocket. I think the combination compass would be great but don't stop carrying one because you have a GPS. The GPS will not tell compass directions unless you are moving, batteries burn out, and even though they are submersible many of the battery compartments are not. How that works is beyond my comprehension---I carry mine in a clear drybag and it works just great inside of it. Steve For all these reasons (also because I just got a GPS) I'm wondering how badly I need a great big compass. I don't expect to be out of sight of land except in fog, and wind is much more of a problem to be expected. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************Received on Mon Oct 11 1999 - 08:10:13 PDT
