Have always used Yakima --- and sometimes Thule --- cradles to transport my boats in the past, and have been very comfortable with the security and support they seem to offer. With my new Audi --- an Avant (wagon) with side rails --- I'd rather not leave the cradle and bike mount equipped rack on the car permanently as I have in the past. Most of the folks at Chesapeake Light Craft (CLC) use plaing bars with black pads and straps to secure their S&G boats, even on longer trips. I've tried it with my Pintail (British heavy) and my CLC North Bay (tough but still a S&G), have not had any problems, but am still wondering if any PWer has had any long term problems develop with their boats as a result of using pads and straps vs. Yak "TLCs" or Thule equivalent kayak mounts?
