This flare thread is getting my cheap Scotts blood up. Just because a flare's expiration date has passed doesn't mean it is instantly defective. The coast guard requires three current dated flares to be legal. You can have as many outdated ones as you want as long as you have three good ones to show the coast guard. Just like you need one approved pfd for legality and can have as many other unapproved ones as you like. So why discard flares that are 99.9% likely to work as well as the legal ones?
