Hello Paddle Wisers, This is a post about how I deal with numbness or soreness in my lower extremities. The last time I dealt with this issue was at the end of our fifty-one mile croosing of Lake Superior in July. When my kayak slid onto the sandy shoreline of Michigan I slid out of my cockpit and sat on my stern deck while I let my legs dangle over each side of the kayak. This position allowed me to stay upright and let my legs stretch out. Some other crossing members who did not do this ened up laying in the water after they had fallen down. I'm 6 ft. tall, and find that my legs fall asleep after about two hours of paddling. >> This is fascinating. I am 5'0" short and thought that the reason my legs and feet went numb was someway connect to my latest companion: Mr. Arthur Itis (along with Mr. Ben Gay)! This may have been discussed before, but maybe it was on another kayak group. This thread reminds me of an issue I have that I'm starting to get used too. I have no problem pulling myself up on a dock or grassy bank to exit my kayak after a couple hours paddling. Legs are a bit stiff, but it's not a problem. Keep hold of the boat, drag it up on shore, do whatever else has to be done. Beach landings, I almost alway capsize in the surf while trying to exit the boat. Not dangerous, because I am far enough up so that I won't wash back into the surf, but pretty silly looking. It has become a sort of personal joke. My legs are just too stiff by that time to manuver me out of the boat successfully. By the time I pick myself up and get my legs under me, I'm fine. Have just enjoyed a quick dip in the surging brine. I'm hoping that as my body gets used to the abuse I'll get over this, but for now, it certainly adds to the excitement of any beach landing! *********************************************** * Matthew Blumenthal * * Fremont CA * * Potter, Guitar Player, General Computer Nut * * mattb_at_ix.netcom.com * * http://www.mattegrafix.com * * ICQ 12691259 * *********************************************** *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************

I'll certainly try the foam rubber "cylinder" cushion under the knees. Hmmmm, last night I decided to buy one of those "bucky" (buck wheat, I believe it is) "C" shaped cushions for supporting your neck while dozing. People swear by them. They also had them in the long sausage shape. I guess the wheat would get too soggy to use while paddling.
