KEY WORDS: Sea Kayaking, Vancouver Island, Nordkapp, Rudders, Writing, Marine Hazards a)NAME: Douglas A Lloyd (AKA: Deep Sea Doug) b)CONTACT: dlloyd_at_bc.sympatico.ca, (250) 952-3022 wk, Victoria, BC. c) BOATS: 1980 Nordkapp (HS) with special-modified rudder, boat has been extensively modified and rebuilt three times as of 1999, including foredeck day-hatch, and inner/outer full length keel.Fiberglass WW kayak was lost to surf, replacing with Necky. Mostly paddled other _British_ sea kayaks (as opposed to anything else, though I like the Arluk 2 and the CD GTS when we rent them for trips with my wife -- good all-around yaks). Like the Romany 18, most of all. Like Sirius, but needs skeg deployed. Like my Nordkapp due to low foredeck...don't mind the wet ride. Would like a carbon-fibre Nordkapp Jubilee. Thinking of building a cedar strip OuterIsland. Best boats are home-built. I share a canoe with a friend. d) BOAT NAME: First stock Nordkapp called "Sea Sea Rider". First Nordkapp rebuild was called "Sea Fever". Second Nordkapp rebuild was called "Sea Bee" (a yellow/black thing, eh). The recent third rebuild is called "Rider On The Storm" in keeping with the coming millennium's drastic global weather changes. e) SPECIAL INTERESTS: Fine woodworking. Canoeing. Youth work, interdenominational, and youth speaker. Developing a cosmology that is inclusive of my Christian pietistic heritage, yet one that is reconcilable with known science and other observable realities of life, liberty, and happiness. Solo rough water sea kayaking. Marine metrology. Marine hazards. Spending money! f) SPECIALIST KNOWLEDGE: Build custom solid wood furniture, teach avocational woodworking, and do seminars/clinics (all above part time). Full-time Medical Adjudicator by vocation. Enjoy writing _what I know_ (Sea Kayaker and Wavelength Magazines, two club newsletters). Lecture on exposed coast paddling, do clinics on self-rescue. g) STRONG OPINIONS: I was drawn to sea kayaking as I felt it would lend a vigorous dimension of athleticism and adventure into my life. It is unfortunate that many regard this as a macho motivation. In fact, ocean kayaking is much more, engaging mind, body, and soul. I strongly feel we should be free to choose our own level of risk and activity. I think a number of kayakers I run into are under skilled and/or under-equipped for the _conditions_ I see them in; their boats are often a bit lightweight. And, I feel a certain percentage of kayakers don't often give back enough to environmental and conservation efforts. h) MOST INTERESTING TRIP: Solo night paddling in tidal overfalls during New Moon and surfing the standing waves without visual references. Love the exposed coast of Nootka Island (off Vancouver Island). Has everything, including surf, cliffs (one section massively split, where it bisects the whole island via a narrow chasm, one section has a huge piece of a freighter jammed into a crevice high above), rock gardens, monstrous boomers that come out of now where, rogue and reflected waves, a notorious reef system extending out an honest 5 miles, tropical like and windswept beaches, waterfalls, rivers, lakes, gales, sunshine, bear, wolves galore, whales (three types), very few paddlers, solitude for the soul, and a rich first nation's history. I've been moved to deep tears of joy many a time out there. N'uff said. i) BIO: I'm 41. Short, but stocky. Conservative in most areas and habits. Married 8 years. Lovely, caring, patient, talented wife. Two daughters (4 and 6) who love canoeing in a variety of sea, lake, and river conditions with me and Mom. Mom sea kayaks with me once a year. I was born in Quebec, raised in West Pakistan (father was a civil engineer, and very adventurous). Puberty spent in California. Teen years to now on Vancouver Island. Government job provides me one day off a week, though I work a longer work day to get it, so, can paddle during work week when I want to if a storm brews up - yeah, baby!
