[Paddlewise] How and when to speak up

A while ago someone posted the "rules of the 50's" (or something like that),
and that really struck it home for me. I've since hung up my boats for the
season. Maybe along with posting flyers stating the dangers of cold-water
paddling you can mention the 50's rule. You safety advocates are getting
through, maybe not to everyone, but it's sinking in with some - keep it up.

On the subject of seat belt laws, etc. - I don't like being told to wear my
seat belt any more than the next guy (I certainly wouldn't go without it
anyway), but I'm in favor for laws protecting children. If an adult doesn't
want to wear a seat belt or pfd that's fine, but they need to put one on the
kid.

On the subject of helmets - wear them. On two occasions they've saved me
and I personally know of several other people they have saved as well. I
don't care what the application is (motorcycles, bicycles, skiing, etc.),
they work. I don't care to have to spoon feed any of my loved ones so if
they're going with me they have to wear one as well.

I'll step down from the soapbox now.

thanks,

Joe
