Recollections are dim now, but I recall that these livers are loaded with one of the vitamins, such as D or E which in high concentrations are fatal, but the victims didn't know that......Anybody else remember this?

Polar bear livers are very high in vitamin A, which is one of the fat-soluble vitamins; in high doses it is toxic and even lethal.
