The devastation that tsunamis cause is also due to the massive amount of water that rushes inland but then the water will run back to the ocean while carrying vast amount of debris with it. If that is not enough it is typical for there to be multiple waves. So after possibly surving the first wave a second one could come in twenty minutes later.
