[Paddlewise] Cleaning Rusty Knives

Several weeks ago I suggested using oven cleaner to assist in cleaning
rusty knives and promised to report back.

I took my trusty, and now somewhat rusty, shorty off my pfd for cleaning
this afternoon. I sprayed it with oven cleaner and let it sit for a few
minutes. Brick rubbing with a course sided sponge removed the easy rust.
Sprayed on oven cleaner again and let it "bake" for 45 minutes. RInse and
scrubbed and low and behold, the heavy rust was still on the knife. So
much for that theory. I will now bring out the brillo pads and if need be
the naval jelly.

As an aside, I can atest to using oven cleaner to clean pitch from saw
blades.

To those in warm climates, enjoy the water.
To those in cold climates, dress properly
To those who are not sure where they are, enjoy
