Scott observes: <People who are content exploring calm water on the weekend certainly do not need to know how to roll. > To me, "it depends" - depends on quite a few things. In my own case, I can die just as easily on a weekend day as on a Wednesday, and I can die in calm water. Over the years I've paddled alone 98% of the time and that's a big factor in my case. I had a very reliable roll on both sides with backup self-rescues, but those rolls almost deserted me after my neck injury. After a very discouraging practice session yesterday I've decided that I'd better hang up my paddle until warmer temps return next summer, and/or paddle only when I can go out with people who are skilled at rescue techniques. Arrrrghhhh!
