Hello Paddle Wisers,

When I teach students to roll a sea kayak, I begin by
teaching them to perform the C to C roll first. The main
reason I do this is because the student is using the
blade to support their roll in a simple manner. They
will bring the blade to a perpendicular position to
their kayak hull and basically perform a high slap brace
(moving the blade directly down into the water).

Once a student has pulled off a few C to C rolls then I
will show them how to perform a sweep roll. I do not
start with the sweep roll because too many students end
up diving their paddles when sweeping the blade.

I advise students to become proficent with many types of
rolls as well as learning to perform them on both sides
of their kayak.

Despite the different rolls I teach my favorite is still
the Tootsie Roll (take the wrapper off and chew on any
side).

Good Paddling,
