Hello Paddle Wisers, I have noticed that there is one difference between rolling a loaded sea kayak vs rolling an unloaded sea kayak. The sea kayak will rotate much quicker if it is unloaded. I noticed this the season after I learned to roll my sea kayak. I was paddling up on Lake Superior up by Hole in the Wall by the Pigeon River. I rolled my kayak by capsizing on my non-dominant side to roll under the kayak and come up on my dominant side. After I capsized I became very aware of the fact that my sea kayak was rotating much slower than it did down in Minneapolis. I do not think that it was harder to roll the sea kayak, it was just different because you had to be a little patient waiting for your body to rotate to the other side of the sea kayak. I think that the added mass of the kayak helps with the roll once the boat momentum is started by your hip snap/leg lift. I found the same thing, more or less. I didn't notice the kayak was that much slower, but I did notice that once I got the boat going up I came up with a little more solidly than when it was empty. In otherwords, rolling a loaded kayak didn't seem any harder and might have been easier.
