I just discovered that my round 8" VCP hatch cover has a major cracking
problem. The crack is only about 1'" long on the outside but runs about 3/4
of the way around the inside. It is right where the side joins the top. You
can not really see it on the inside unless you flex the cover as if you were
pulling it off the hatch. The boat is about 2 1/2 years old. I have applied
303 protectant to the outside of the cover every 2-3 weeks but have not done
anything on the inside. I store my boat with the hatch covers on the hatch.
The large oval VCP cover on the rear hatch does not seem to have any problem.

Is this normal wear? Was I doing (or not doing) something that could have
contributed to this cracking? Your experiences and suggestions would be
appreciated.

This sounds abnormal to me, too. I have a couple of the same size VCP
hatch covers, but though after three years they are starting to show
superficial flex cracks on the outside, they are still flexible and have
no cracking or sign of UV damage on the inside. I once saw one on
another person's kayak, however, that was so old and brittle that it was
actually missing a large piece that had cracked out. I don't know why he
hadn't replaced it. A new one costs about $30.

I had exactly the same problem - my boat is about the same age.
