>> Chuck - I have a question (on another topic, really) - which collapsible chair do you have? We've been carrying Crazy Creeks, but the collapsible chairs really are more comfortable, especially on long trips, but we weren't sure if they would fit in the Romany hatches. A number of the ones that I've seen fold up narrow enough, but seem to be pretty long to get into the hatch. >> We use the Travel Chair from REI (http://merc.rei.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=2214&prmenbr= 8000), which disassembles into a package about 5 inches wide by 22.5 inches long. It is narrow enough that I can just barely wiggle it in alongside the skeg box in my Romany, but if necessary, I could distribute the pieces throughout the kayak. It has a drawback in that the frame is made from tubular steel, but it has almost no rust after six years' use, and it is nice to have a chair with a backrest that gets you off the ground. One modification I made was to shrink one-inch diameter heat shrink tubing onto the frame pieces that rest on the ground. This protects the chair from scratches when you have to set it up on rock. I recommend the REI Travel Chair because it gets you up out of the dirt and mud and provides more back support. And used in conjunction with the Thermarest cushion it can be very comfortable. I also find it doesn't take up that much for room than the Crazy creek chair and well worth the expense.
