I did not determine the expiration date but instead marked the "purchase" date in permanent marker. If the foil stays intact, I will assume they will last for 2 or 3 years. You are right that they must stay in the wrapper. The light sticks have just been added to our clubs yearly signal devices demonstration at our "Sea Kayak Introduction" weekend course. (This will allow rotation for new ones into the instructors kits.) Chuck Holst suggestion of a Krill light however, is MUCH more appropriate for my night paddles.
