"I am saddened to hear that you were raked over the "back channel" coals by someone trying to protect the newbies." It is after all, only words. We all possess cerebral cortex, frontal lobes, etc. all standard equipment that came on our respective model years. Information will never hurt. We can read a post of someone's hairboat experience and have one of two reactions to it: "Jeeze-Louise! I'd never be caught dead doing that!!!" (deliberately surfing whirlpools which necessitated seatbealts (!) in kayaks elicited a similar response in my own heart) or conversely ... "Party ON! Go for it man!" What we assent to reading a post at our desks before a monitor is not necessarily what we would attempt while deciding whether or not to go plunging through 6 foot haystacks of white water marching to the horizon... My current acquired philosophy on newbies and questionable surf conditions is: if anyone that suffers from a lack of humility, the Atlantic is only too willing to help them rediscover it. (Which is why we wear pfds.....and sometimes even helmets ....and sometimes just take a nap on the couch.) *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************Received on Sat Jan 15 2000 - 15:12:03 PST
