I and others have found getting suitable springs a pain.

the bungie idea is to attach it to the cut down handle of a standard hand operated bilge pump and run it through a fitting on the roof of the cockpit, (and secured and adjusted with an olive cleat of course!). The bungie draws the pump diaphragm back.

I've not used this system as I have an electric pump at the moment but its quite popular here and one builder has started using it. One reason for its popularity is its simplicity and it makes it possible to use cheap bilge pumps effectively. ie. saves buying henderson and other relatively costly pumps. The people I know who use this system just use the cheap plastic pumps that yacht chandlers have in droves.

whether this would work with the gusher you have i don't know. Perhaps drill a hole in the top and bolt in something to loop the bungie through?
