For those who paddle in places where visibility is the best defense
against inebriated big-boat persons, Cabelas now offers a "Boonie hat"
in blaze orange for $17.95. See:

Happy Millinium,

I want to imphasize that, with our kayaks looking like logs-on-the-water, a
bright hat (along with bright paddle blades) is one of the best visibility
enhancers available to us.

fishing to paddling.

A dark day in Y2K

After being unable to locate my favorite boonie hat -- all cotton, formerly a medium green but now faded nearly grey -- I went paddling this weekend wearing a baseball cap.

That evening, while putting out the trash, I found my hat, discarded without ceremony by my wife. "You need a new hat. That one is horrible. It was falling apart and it is too small." True, the color is gone, the sweat band is frayed away, the brim is falling apart. Salt water had been at work too long. I looked sadly at it, and closed the lid on my old friend. Its time had gone.

jerry.
