Sandy;

One criteria unmentioned has been nasty emissions. Minivans
and trucks, exempted from strict standards, are with a few
exceptions, dirty. I drive a Civic, and when it dies, I will
look into a gas/electric hybrid vehicle. I can't go on some
logging roads or sleep in the back, but I'm willing to
sacrifice.

Ed, dismounting his high horse.

I was going to write something along these lines, so allow me to
second your comment. I'll differ on one point - I don't consider it
a sacrifice.

There are a few good, small cars that are suitable for kayakers.
If my Civic VX dies, I'll probably get a Golf TDI (for Turbo Direct
Injection or some such) which gets roughly the same great fuel
economy. It has built-in roof rack attachment points. It will easily
carry two sea kayaks with two paddlers and lots of gear. Down
side is that it's pricey.

The good news is that Clinton recently announced an initiative to
bring small truck under the same standards for fuel economy,
pollution and safety as cars.

If you object to littered campsites, oil slicks on the water and
beaches covered with beer cans and broken bottles, consider the
stuff coming out your exhaust pipe in the same class.
