Hey, I was recently informed that my Sweetwater water purification system does
not meet EPA's expectations for the killing of Viruses.
http://www.cascadedesigns.com/sweetwater/sweetwater_home.html
They said that my filter will work fine, just use tablets or bleach when
drinking from sources that may contain fecal matter. YUM!
Really, I bought the pump to get away from the iodine and bleach.
Thought I might alert you to this, I still love the filter, but feel like
something should be done - to remedy the defective product.
Anyone hears about it - please let me know.

Later,
Phil

VIRUS.. is the key word.....mostly it's bacterial contamination that's a
concern (cholera, shigella, salmonella, e.coli). etc that occur in "unsafe
water". There are a few protozoans (Giardia is the most famous in the US,
but there are many others). In the 3rd World, various helminths, and small
creepy little parasites) can make life miserable. Your filter takes care of
all of them.

Viral infections?  Only hepatitis A is easily transmitted by drinking water;
the polio virus is mostly of historic concern. It is of note that HepA
vaccines are now available.

I imagine if you did a poll of all Paddlewisers, you would find the
incidence of enteric infections from water to be relatively rare compared to
that of the "influenza sneeze" at work, or the Taco Bell salmonella fix, or
the respiratory infection caused by a contaminated air conditioning system.

I use an MSR filter, which does filter viruses, but at the expenditure of a
lot of elbow work ( I use the ceramic filter). I also carry some antibiotics
which work well for enteric infections (as well as other types)....there's
no reason not to carry some Cipro, Flagyl, and Amoxicillin for really
extended trips (2 weeks or more)...with some medical advice and a bit of
common sense, it's a safety item.

None of which is actually germane to your post about the inadequacy of Pur
water filters.
