An interesting "layup" I saw when working in the aircraft industry was for
a US military fighter's access hatch. It was made with a Kevlar honeycomb
core (! never seen anything like this since - must be expensive) about
1 cm thick. The outer side of the core was covered with titanium wire screen
(like window screen only made with titanium) and both sides covered with layers
of Kevlar and carbon fibre. It was light as a feather and capable of stopping
some serious calibre fire. This stuff would be ideal for Doug's next kayak!
