[Paddlewise] PaddleWise Get-Togethers

Joan Volin, on reading about Peter Osman's visit with Sandy Kramer, said
something to the effect that wouldn't it be nice to have a PaddleWise
get-together. More than nice. Let's do it!!

Thusfar, I have hosted in the Big Apple at least 3 PaddleWisers from
afar, Rich Mitchell, Casey Walker and Sandy. Rich came actually in
pre-PaddleWise days having made contact via Wavelength and my
newsletter. We had a memorable twilight paddle to the Statue of Liberty
from the Downtown Boathouse with my wife and a friend; saw the sun go
down behind the Statue as the city's skyline behind us burst into a
million twinkling lights. Casey came last July; I arranged for him to
paddle with the regular weekend morning free public program trip from
the Boathouse to the Statue; I met him only briefly at the end of the
trip. And Sandy and Son (who lives in the city) came down briefly to
the Boathouse to do a bit of paddling in the immediate embayment and try
out my K-Light.

I have thoroughly enjoyed meeting these people and showing off our
paddling opportunities...many people from afar don't think of NYC as a
paddling destination...but it is, with 700 miles of shoreline and
diverse destinations to paddle to from busy traffic and sightseeing to
quiet marshes, 500 foot cliffs, waterfalls, numerous islands, etc.

I volunteer Joan and myself to coordinate some form of get-together
around Memorial Day when things warm up. There are plenty of locals on
this PaddleWise list and people from other places might want to
coordinate a trip to the city for vacation or business with such a
get-together. Maybe we will do that sushi dinner paddle that we
couldn't time right last year. :-)

Perhaps other nodules of PaddleWisers might want to do something similar
in their environs and perhaps out-of-towners might be able to coordinate
trips there and join in.

Of course, there is a risk. Being email and listserv pals is one thing.
Actually meeting each other may be a shock. I'm reminded of that great
New Yorker Magazine cartoon depicting two dogs. One is in front of a
computer screen and keyboard. He turns to the other and says "On the
Internet, nobody knows you're a dog." :-)
