There's actually lots of camping around NY.  I live abut 50 miles north
of the city, and there's a nice campground not far from here.  HRWA
(Hudson River Watertrails Assn) has a couple of sites up & down the
river, but those are accessible only from the river).  There are
campgrounds nearby in New Jersey.  Etc., etc., etc.

I don't think Central Park, though....
