I rented a Current Designs Extreme (standard volume) at
Monterey Bay Kayaks and had the great good luck of two
whales chugging by less than a hundred feet away, about an
hour apart. Too cool. Also a otter sleeping with his little
paws over his eyes to shield them from the sun. Too cute.

Next time I'll portage to Point Lobos (just south of
Carmel); that place is too gorgeous.

The guy who gave me my pre-launch briefing told me the
lanyard didn't work and that I should just put the rudder
down before I went out. Or I could twist around and deploy
it with my paddle. I just left it up; I think skeg would be
better anyway. Guy said the new models had corrected the
problem. So keep that in mind if you're scouting for a used
one.

It was more comfortable than my Caribou, but I am still
working on that back-support issue.

I really wish the CD Extreme had a retractable skeg option. It is a perfect boat for this feature. The rudder system hasn't given us any such problems but basically is a PITA.

Congrads on the whale sightings =:-o)

Have you tried a Snapdragon backstrap on the Caribou? Just a thought.

I agree. I demoed a CD Extreme last summer, and the 2 minutes I had the
rudder in the water were extremely annoying. It's a great boat, handles
well without the rudder, and a skeg would probably be an excellent
substitute.

I demoed the Extreme in choppy seas and 10 to 15 knot winds. It handles OK
but not as nicely as the smaller Solstice GTS, which it resembles. It does
turn easier than the GTS, but weathercocks more. The rudder was more useful
for the Extreme than the GTS, which hardly needs a rudder at all.
