We three experienced paddlers are planning a trip from Skidegate to Anthony Island in September, 2000. We've looked at charts and sources for weather information, including Sailing Directions for the area. The question was raised, "Would it be possible to make this a round trip by paddling on the west side of Moresby Island"? We recognize that there can be serious sea conditions there and the coastline is exposed; however, we were wondering if any members of the list have first hand experience paddling on the west side of Moresby Island? If so, could you enlighten us. Hi Gary, I took a guide course in 98 that was lead by Marty Rosen ( guided with ecosummer for years). He told us of his own solo trip out on the west coast a number of years ago. He mentioned that due to weather and sea state, he spent more than half the trip stuck on shore waiting for a break to move which leads to the question how much time you have ( three weeks? ) and the implications of getting the trip done in the allotted time frame. By no means am I judging your groups skill or abilities but do you have extra time available if your delayed due to weather and conditions. Gord Pincock of Butterfly tours paddles out there, you may try contacting him to see if he will share his knowledge of the area. Is this the same group paddling Gulfstreams? Sounds like a great trip and if you care to, keep the list posted on how your plan comes together. We stopped by Neil & Betty Carey's place in Sandspit last year to meet them. If your not familiar with them, they worked, beachcombed and homesteaded that coast for years and wrote a book ( Puffin Cove ) about their experiences. Very engaging and approachable people. Maybe you could correspond with them via e-mail and tap in to their knowledge of that coastline. Thanks, folks, for your input regarding paddling on the west side of the Queen Charlotte Islands. The group had a meeting tonight, and the decision was made to limit our paddling to the east side of Moresby Island. Key to the decision was Doug Lloyd's recollection of Prof. Wayne Hack having one of his toe nails rot off from the cold, wet weather on the west side. Everyone said "Eeeuuw." What we will do, though, is take a little reconnaissance paddle up the west side, from Anthony Island, to experience the actual conditions. We'll probably spend a night up there, and use the information for planning a possible trip down the west side in the future.
