In response to Andrew's article, in a personal correspondence with George Gronseth, George remarked that if this person had taken his course, then he should have known not to venture forth without tide tables. Having personally taken George's 5 day course, I can attest that George discusses tides and tidal currents in great detail. Discussion is followed by practical application of these concepts. George also noted that at least they had wet & dry suits. Andrew updates his report as follows: ---------- From: Skamokawa Center <skpaddle_at_pacifier.com> Date: Mon, 13 Mar 2000 09:26:21 -0800 To: "Robert C. Cline" <rccline_at_swbell.net> Cc: dkruger_at_pacifier.com, rnelson_at_cport.com Subject: Re: Trapped by the tide This is Andrew Emlen writing regarding "Trapped by the Tide." I have one correction (pitfalls of sending out a story in draft form). I checked the Oregon Graduate Institute's data from their monitor at Woody Island, which shows the Columbia's temperature to have been closer to 43? F during the time of the kayakers' ordeal, not 48? as I had reported. This will be useful for any trying to apply the sea conditions rating system to this event. -Andrew ---------- >From: "Robert C.
