Hi Tony, I have option 1 and 2 combined: I built a boat rack that is attached to my aluminum camper shell at the 4 corners and 1 small "kicker" brace down to a rib in the middle. I welded it myself, and made all 3 crossbars 1 1/8" diameter so I can use Yakima accessories on it. I just have a shortbed Nissan hardbody pickup, but a 6'-6" span is still a good spread for carrying kayaks.
