You can't. Or, at least, you can't walk into their office for one. I
called them last week (or maybe the week before) about this. I'd ordered
one 4 or 5 months ago through a Seattle gear shop, which never arrived.
MSR claimed last week that their new stock was in transit from Sweden, so
I asked the retailer to re-order it.

No sign of it yet. Since it's and *alcohol* stove, it would be
appropriate if someone started bootlegging the things over the border!

By now, I suspect everyone involved is bored with much ado about a $28
stove. (I mean me, MSR and the dealer, not Paddlewisenheimers.)

I wouldn't be surprised if one of the Strines or Zedlanders on this list
could score one so quick it would make your head swim . . . then there's
just the cost of shipping . . .

Eggzactly right!!

The population of Hamilton is a bit over 100,000. There are three or four
shops in town where I could walk in tomorrow and buy one (swap you for a
krill light?). Then every petrol station in town stocks methylated spirits
to fuel it with, and most hardware shops too.

So living at the centre of civilisation doesn't get you everything.
Sometimes living upside down has advantages.

My advice to those of you looking to score a Trangia is to go with
either the the 25-5 or the 27-5. This is with the two non-stick pans.
While you have to take a bit more care with them, they are
incredible. You can burn the hell out of a mess of hashbrowns, and
they just slide out. No more bringing the scouring pads. Info can be
found at http://www.trangia.se/trangia_inter/produkt/t25/default.html
(and those of you simply curious can go and look at the system)

The other great thin about this stove, the stove itself is small
enough that pretty much everything I need for cooking fits inside the
pots including a multi-spice dispenser, a spatula, matches, small
bottle of oil, small bottle of basalmic vinegar, and silverware.

You might take a look at www.piragis.com - they handle Trangia and have a #23
listed - don't know how it compares to the #28 - looks to be very economical
and compact. They also have the Sierra Zip Stove, which was discussed a while
back. Piragis Northwoods Company is a Boundary Waters outfitter, and they
also have a nice on-line catalogue. Good reliable people from my experience
with them - standard disclaimer yada yada yada ....

You could try mail order from Mountain Equipment Coop in Vancouver.
The Toronto store has a bunch of them in stock - I was looking at them
after the discussion here. However, it's not in the latest catalog, so
they may not sell it by mail. I can't remember the exact price, but it seems
to me it was around C$30 with windscreen. That's only around US$20.

www.mec.ca (the usual disclaimers apply).

PS - after cooking with an alcohol stove for three weeks on a sailboat
twenty three years ago, I still can't bring myself to use an alcohol
stove today. Too low a cooking temperature.

Not wanting to beat a dead horse but... The Trangia actually has a
very hot cooking temperature. I'm not just talking about boiling
water either. I like to prepare pretty elaborate meals (as many here
who have paddled with me can probably attest), that means Thai
curries, hashbrowns with veggies, breakfast burritos and lots of
things that need both high boiling heat and low simmering heat. In
fact, I don't think I've ever actually cooked anything freeze dried
-- I'm probably too cheap.

The Trangia uses a "jet" (OK, I'm making the terminology up) system
that works much like your typical MSR stove. Once the stove heats up,
the small holes around the perimeter start to jet and kick out quite
a bit of heat. I still have my Whisperlight to use as a back up or
for really cold cooking, but since getting the Trangia I simply
haven't needed it.
