Paddlewisers, I'm interested in getting a Greenland-style wood paddle to try. Does anyone know of someone that makes Greenland paddles to your measurements? I know there are a few makers who make some standard sizes, but is there anyone out there (pro or hobbyist) that makes custom-fit ones for a decent price? I'd try it myself, but I don't have access to tools or a workspace at the moment (which is the only thing standing between me and building a kayak, too). Thanks, Steve =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Steven Jarvis sjarvis_at_dicksonstreet.com Fayetteville, Arkansas USA =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************

Try Hank at Iapetus Boat Works in Cape Elizabeth, ME. 207.799.0791. I thought he used to have a web site but I couldn't find it. <Does anyone know of someone that makes Greenland paddles to your measurements?> Another option, Steve --- although, from Arkansas, I'm not sure how viable it would be for you --- is to take a clinic with George Ellis; he typically cuts a blank per your anthropometric data and delivers it to the clinic site for your further hacking and hewing. It really doesn't take a lot of equipment or space to craft a paddle, especially if you can start at the blank part. Take a look for his data in the archives --- his method is the easiest and least tool-intensive, and his methods (after building about ten his way, I think it's safe to say) are solid. There are differences between a paddle you make yourself for $5-$25.00 out of a 2x4 and one from a quality builder like Mark Rogers. I'm not saying in the hands of a skilled user the same things can't be done but if nothing else the finish he gets from the west system epoxy is very nice on the hands. ;-) JFF >when maligiaq was out here with me, in exchange for the support i gave >him, he made me a paddle. i had to go & buy the tools & the wood. the >tools were: hand plane, woodsaw [cheap cross cut] and a file. he had a >pocket knife. he "measured" me, and had the paddle done in a couple days. >the wood [clear 2x4x16, then he hacked off the ends & kept the best part] >cost the most!! less than $50 total. either chuck or greg have a page on >how to make your own... hopefully they'll reply [if they haven't already] > >mark *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************
I got two of Mark Rogers paddles and I've also made them myself. Marks fit and finish is great but it they aren't that hard to make if your want to give it a try. He will make them your size and help you find the size that's best. They run around $190.00.
