Ed,

I used to live in Brunswick. One of my favorite paddles is down Cat Head
Creek, from west of Exit 10 off I-90, down to the town of Darien (about
20 miles north of Jekyll Island). It's about a 4 hour paddle. Take Exit
10 about a mile west, follow the left fork when the road splits, and look
for a culvert crossing. Put in there. Take out is at the river's north
bank just west of highway 17. The creek splits at one point, and you
should take the right fork. The left fork dead-ends. Lots of old rice
plantation sluice valves and side channels available for side trips to
look for water mocassins, etc. It's shaded with lots of riverside trees
and you can see alligators. Try to do it on a falling tide so you aren't
fighting the current, as it's tidal in the lower half of the trip.

You can paddle the Intracoastal Waterway inland of St. Simons Island.
You can paddle the surf off St. Simons or Jekyll, but be careful of the
tidal current between the two islands. Its fast and strong, and can get
you in trouble if you don't know local conditions. As I recall, the
rising tide carries you south from St. Simons and probably north from
Jekyll. In between it can get really choppy.

Another great trip is from Fort Clinch, FL to Cumberland Island National
Seashore, GA. I wouldn't try it alone, though.
