On the subject of how close should you get to a Glacier. Tide is another factor. In Glacier packed bays such as John Hopkin's in Glacier bay the incoming tide can pack the ice in aroung a glacier. So if you paddle in close your escape can be blocked but the packed in ice chunks. The tide ice can also push the paddler too close to an iceberg. To quote my fellow Alaskan david seng " Floating bergs can be dangerous if they roll and the unsuspecting paddler is too close - and it's nearly impossible to tell how large or what shape they are underwater." So if your thinking about getting close to a Glacier...check your tide table.
