You must have got hold of a bad batch.  I also have two of them, and they are
in their fourth season!  Never any hint of breakage -- I compress the outside
of the slide so the other slot fits over the bag/pin and slides more easily.

If yours failed so easily, you have grounds for asking for a replacement (which
it sounds like you do not want), or your money back.
