For those interested in a bit of heresy, a French physician did a solo
crossing of the Atlantic Ocean with the specific goal of seeing if he could
live off the sea.

His book, "The Voyage of the Heretique" (should be underlined, not in " ",
but I can't figure out how to do that - my apology to all you language
mavens out there), was published in English by Simon and Schuster in 1953,
Library of Congress catalog number 54-5813. It's not only an enjoyable read
of what some will do "in the pursuit of science" (and thank the cosmic
muffin they exist), but also for his views AND actual experience in
drinking sea water.

When you boil it down to the essence (pun intended) he says he calculated
he could absorb 800-900 grams of salt water a day, for about 5 days, before
toxcicity would become acute. I realize this may not directly address the
cooking with seawater question, but would be good to know in a survival
situation, assuming you believe the good Doctor.

For those who live in the Pacific Northwest, the Seattle Public Library
has, or at least did, a copy of the book in their reference stacks.
