Just wanted to let everyone know that we had a great day paddling today. My
friend Mike and I put in at Leo Carrillo Beach at about 8:30 AM. The water
was relatively flat. There was a 3 ft surf and and the swell was about 2 to
3 foot. Mike launched effortlessly as he usually does and I got into my boat
and promptly fell right out. The 62 deg water was a nice wake-up although I
was wearing a wet suit.

We had no sooner gone about a 1/4 mile when we saw several sea lions. Soon,
we also saw a seal, several dolphin, a "pod" of 3 scuba divers, and then
when we were about a mile from the launch point, we saw a whale from about
100 yards. It stayed with us for 3 shallow dives and when it went deep, we
lost it.

We paddled about 7 miles and an off shore wind started to kick up. We then
turned around and headed back to our put in. The swell also started to pick
up and every few minutes, we would get a 5 foot swell.

The wind kept picking up and it was causing the waves to steepen. We finally
arrived at the beach and Mike headed in first. A beautiful landing by him
and it was my turn.

I hate surf landings, because 2 out of 3 times I usually wind up swimming.
Somehow, I managed to do it perfectly today and a man on the beach even came
up and said I made it look easy.

That was the perfect ending to an almost perfect day.
