Dear Friends:

Just received a copy of Greg Rasmussen's "Kayaking in Paradise: Journeys
from Alaska through the Inside Passage." Beautiful pictures and
well-written, too.

I bought mine from Powell's (a famous store in Portland, OR) via their
website at www.powells.com.

Any other recommendations for photographic essays on sea kayaking?

Happy Easter, Joyous Passover (pick your holiday!).

It's not really a photographic essay (it does have some photos). Since I'm
new on this list (about two months) it may have been discussed before, but .
. .

I'm currently reading Chris Duff's "On Celtic Tides". It's an account of
paddling a kayak around Ireland. I happen to think Ireland is one of the
most beautiful places on earth. I'm really enjoying the book. It would be
especially good reading for those (like myself) with a special interest in
Ireland, but it's also great just for the paddling. Makes me want to go
back over to Ireland and get a kayak. . .

I can't agree. I found the excerpt on the books website misleading. Most of the
book is more about Chris' inner journey than about the trip. And while I liked
his trip notes, there was too much of the other stuff in between to keep me
going.

I'm not saying that it isn't a good book. Just don't get it if you are looking
for a trip report.

Regards
Ferdinand

I mentioned this earlier this week -- it's not about sea kayaking, but it's
of country that most of us would like to go sea kayaking in and the photos
are stunning -- Alaska Blues, by Joe Upton. It's mostly about a season of
commerical fishing in the inside passage. It was out of print for a long
time but there's a new edition out. Neat book!

A German book "Seekajakziele", with lots of good photos and info on
many destinations in the Mediterranean. Available from Amazon.de.

I did a search on "Seekajakziele" and came up with a link that also incudles
Lindeman's book, "Alone at Sea."

Someone had inquired about where that might be obtained. here it is:

Ferdinand, I'm so glad to hear you say this. I practically had to force
myself to finish it. My first husband was Scots Irish and I love and have
been to both places, so I couldn't understand why I found it slow reading.

On the other hand, I'm now reading Kabloona in a Yellow Kayak by Victoria
Jason and I'm finding it fascinating. I was wondering if perhaps I'm
relating more to the woman's perspective.

Most exciting of all was her mention of meeting Phil Torrens - and that he
and his paddling companion suffered a grizzly attack!!! I was like,
"OHMYGOD, Phil Torrens. I know him." which just goes to show how attached
we get to other P'wisers.

I guess I'll add a couple of things. Chris is here in our greater
neighborhood and had a book reading (two actually). Hearing him read it
was poetry. The spiritual nature of the trip and the deep meaning for
him was very apparent to me. I've gone on a couple of short solo trips
and can relate to the way one relates to the environment in that
situation, and then for him to stumble on his own heritage quite by
mistake was also great. I'm not sure I'll read the book after hearing
him, although I did buy one!

Read it - his talk is the abbreviated version, and you really get to live
it with the book. My regret when reading it was that life kept
interrupting - I would have liked to sit down & read it all at once, but
had to keep breaking off & losing the mood.

The only down side is that the pictures are black & white, & the ones he
shows when he speaks are in color.

My reaction to Chris Duff's book was similar to Andree Hurley's. I heard
Chris give a presentation about his trip, then bought and read the book.
Perhps it's not a "great book", but it is a very good book, well worth
reading. I admire his courage and his kayaking skills, far beyond anything I
can imagine myself doing. But I can really identify with his sense of
spirituality while paddling, and while visiting places which were new to him.
This sort of inner journey is the essence of the kayaking experience for me.
