We are planning a trip over the Easter weekend to the southern tip of the peninsula of Va. We want to paddle around Fisherman's Island and perhaps up to and around part of Smith Island. We were wondering if anyone knew of this area and could give us some information on the usual conditions. We know we will be on the ocean side of Smith and some ideas of what this means but we were wondering if we could get any details about anything unusual about that area. There is an area that seems to be a mystery called Smith Island Inlet that is labeled "Area subject to frequent change." What this means to kayakers I have no idea and am not real comfortable with. Does this mean it is sometimes a mud flat like other areas around there or is there something else going on there? This is particularly important because if this is cut off it would substantially impact the length of the trip. It may even be questionable getting to Smith Island by going through Fishermans Inlet. We have other places we can paddle but this look very interesting.
