With all this GPS talk I'm led to ask about a different technological toy. Are any of you using a palm pilot for things like tide tables, charts, maps, or other paddling uses? I'll be inheriting an old Palm III soon and am wondering how I can put it to use on the water. Also, a quick thanks to the list. I'm a new paddler and I've learned a lot and have had my interest in kayaking constantly renewed by your posts. Thanks! Steve __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I found a PalmPilot program called "TideTool" that did this very well indeed. I think it's a port of XTide for UNIX. You need to load a database for the area you wish to get tides for. This gives the program the parameters it needs to calculate the tides in any given location. Since I carry the silly thing everywhere, I'm always pulling it out at the beach to see what the tide is doing. *************************************************************************** PaddleWise Paddling Mailing List - All postings copyright the author and not to be reproduced outside PaddleWise without author's permission Submissions: paddlewise_at_lists.intelenet.net Subscriptions: paddlewise-request_at_lists.intelenet.net Website: http://www.paddlewise.net/ ***************************************************************************
Yep - I have TideTool (freeware) on it. It's not all-inclusive for locations, but it's pretty good. You can get tides or currents (interestingly, the sites for each vary somewhat). It will also give you times of sunrise and sunset. http://www.toolworks.com/bilofsky/tidetool.htm usual disclaimer Joan On Tue, 4 Apr 2000 18:56:36 -0700 (PDT) Steve Posti <steveposti_at_yahoo.com> writes: > With all this GPS talk I'm led to ask about a > different technological toy. Sea Kayaker Magazine (www.seakayakermag.com) had a very good review of the Palm in a recent issue a few months ago. It included my favorite Palm application, which is Tide Tool. This program is as good an example of the wondrous benefits of the the Gnu Public License (GPL) as you'll find anywhere this side of Linux. Tide Tool is great for the spur of the moment decision of whether to go paddling this weekend, especially when that decision requires currents to be above or below a certain level. I actually went out and bought a Palm pilot so I could use the Tide program. Turns out to be the best gadget I've bought in years. I catch up on all my paddlewise e-mail on my Pilot.
