The highway shows your course and track together and is quick visual to see
if you are drifting off course.

Subject: [Paddlewise] Garmin eMap question

Hey Garmin GPS users,
I've noticed the eMap due to its low cost and street map features, but I
also would like to use it in the yak.
A review of it said: (http://joe.mehaffey.com/emaprevue.htm)
>There are a number of features important to hiking and marine use which
eMap does not have. The most >important are:
>1) eMap is not submersion rated, just "rain resistant" and is not sealed.
Water entry could cause eMap >failure.
>2) Marine users likely would miss the "highway" cross track steering page
which eMap does not offer. However, >if the unit is properly shielded from
water, all the essential features for hiking are present.

Obviously, the lack of waterproofing is a big concern. But I like the
map features and low price and am considering putting it in a VHF
radio-type waterproof bag and taking my chances.

My question is, will I miss this "highway" cross track steering page
(whatever that is)? Is that a page you use often? Is there anything else
you notice about the eMap that would make it unsuitable for use on a
typical kayak trip?

Thanks,
Frank
