In my estimation, as a professional meteorologist and experienced sailor, a barometer will do you no good at all. Perhaps a barograph would give you some warning of an approaching weather event but they are delicate instruments. Local knowledge leavened with observation of changes in cloud cover and cloud type and variation in wind direction and velocity are your best bet for short term local forecasting.
