I was surprised, but yes, I was able to peel the old 5200 off the hull. I
had cleaned it with acetone and roughed it up with 80 grit.

Ooops!  I did not read your post carefully before I initially responded,
Bob. 
So the 5200 is losing its bond to the fiberglass?  Do I have that right?

If so, I suspect surface preparation is the culprit.  Even the fast-set
stuff
is incredibly adherent, in my experience.
