The failure was partly the original hydrogrip which then increased the
stress on the remaining foam which split. I reglued the foam to the hull and
also repaired the split. It seems pretty secure now. I'm going to give it a
workout after work.. If it fails again, I'll opt for the pegs.

Ditto here, except that I **have** used the fast-set 5200 to attach D-ring
holders (PVC) to the inside of the hull of my fiberglass yaks, and that
stuff
is also permanent.  I use 80-grit to roughen both surfaces, and a clean
acetone
swab to remove any oils (etc.).

Bob, if the foam is delaminating from your hull after adhering with 5200, I
bet
the failure is in the foam, not the 5200.
