Linda and I attended the San Diego Kayak Club festival, too, and had a
great time meeting and chatting with Duane, Jim, Marie, and other members
of the club. Linda even found a British couple to talk to, and a guy from
Saint Paul to give an Inland Sea Kayakers brochure to! It appears to be a
well-organized club for being only a year old, and even has a championship
kayak polo team. I thought I'd see more people on the water, though; Duane
and Jim Gabriel spent practically as much time on the water as everybody
else combined.

We rented Lookshas and Werner paddles from Southwest Kayaks to paddle over
to the festival. It must have been the unfamiliar equipment that caused me
to miss a roll on my off side and wet exit (darned round shafts!), but I
recovered with a reentry and roll, which made me feel better. I took a lot
of pictures, Duane, including several of the water polo match. I'll send
you some when they are developed.

One thing amused me when we were renting the kayaks. When I mentioned that
we were used to Romanys, the fellow who was helping us (not Ed Gillet) said
he had never heard of them!

<snip>

All you have to do is get involved. I am involved and have dozens of
kayaking friends, and because of it I rarely get a chance to paddle alone.
Even today we had a wonderful event in Mission Bay with the San Diego Kayak
Club. It was an anniversary festival, and we had 45 members present for
informal classes, rolling and rescue practice, a swap meet, trying out each
other's kayaks, BBQ and potluck, socializing, and kayak polo. What more
could you ask for?
