I fish a large area of sandbars called "flats". Has anyone ever replaced their rudder or augmented it with a trolling motor. I have a seakayak--not an ocean or "sit-on-top". I'd like to know any bad experiences and or what type of trolling motor used. Thanks in advance.

Hi John,

I don't know if this helps - doesn't involve a motor - but I notice that one of Paddlewise's members, Hal Levine, sells a device called "EZ Troll" and it only costs $10.95. You can find out about it at: http://www.jlc.net/~hlevin/

John,

I use a trolling motor on my canoe from time to time (but don't tell anyone on Paddlewise) but I think fixing one onto a kayak would be difficult. As an engineer it would be an interesting challenge. Possibly a flexible shaft as used in a Dremel tool would allow the motor & battery to be mounted away from the rudder, with the propellor attached to the rudder. Have fun. (Beware the effect of torque on a narrow boat.)

jerry.
