> There has been discussion on this list and in my local paddling group >about the Standard HX 150S being rated as only water resistant or >"intermediate" waterproof. My question is where does the claim of it being >only "intermediate" waterproof originate? Is there a construction >difference >between the two models? Is there independent testing to back up this >claim? > The reason I ask is that the only indication (that I have found) that >the >150S is less waterproof than the 350S appears on the product tag found at >West Marine. Standard does not claim a difference in waterproofness. >Could >it be that West Marine's designation of the 150S being only "intermediate" >is an attempt to encourage consumers to buy the more expensive model? Or >could it be that the intermediate designation is based on an older model? I don't know if this applies to the 150S and 350S, but I do remember a West Marine "Advisor" (those in-depth background side-bars they publish)from a couple of years back which noted that sometimes the waterproof warrenty a manufacturer offers has more to do with sales than engineering. They mentioned the case of an unnamed manufacturer who had boosted the waterproof warrenty on a given model of radio from (I think) one year to three years, without making any change in the design; the manufacturer seemed to be calculating that the cost of the additional "hits" they would take under the extended warrenty would be more than offset by the additional sales they would make as a result of the extended warrenty. So I guess what we should really be looking for is not only the warrenty the manufacturer offers, but also the "objective" rating as determined by one or more of the actual industry tests.
